Every obstacle fitness race has the same two casualties. The runner who cruises the first kilometres, then stalls completely at the carries — arms gone, grip gone, watching the clock eat the 90-minute medal. And the lifter who powers through every strength station, then spends the runs in the red zone, heart rate pinned, losing minutes everywhere.

With [The Yoddha Race coming to Hyderabad on 5 December 2026](https://fisique.fitness/blog/what-is-the-yoddha-race-hyderabad-guide), this is the most important thing to understand before you build a training plan: **the race is designed to find your missing dimension**.

## What running prepares you for — and what it doesn't

A running base is genuinely valuable. It gives you the aerobic engine that lets you recover between efforts, and recovery-between-efforts is the hidden currency of any timed event. But running prepares exactly zero of the following:

- **Loaded carries** — moving weight over distance taxes traps, core, and grip in ways running never touches
- **Grip endurance** — the first system to fail on race day, and the least trained in most programs
- **Upper-body strength under fatigue** — pulling, pressing, and crawling when you are already gassed
- **Strength-to-cardio transitions** — the brutal first 30 seconds after a carry, when your heart rate spikes and you still have to run

## What lifting prepares you for — and what it doesn't

Standard gym strength transfers better than most runners expect — squats, deadlifts, and presses build the raw capacity the stations demand. But a typical bodybuilding split trains strength in 40-second efforts with 2-minute rests. Race day offers no rests. Strength you cannot access at 170 bpm is strength you do not have on the course.

## The four capacities that actually decide your finish time

1. **Aerobic engine** — steady-state base plus intervals. This sets your recovery speed between stations.
2. **Strength under fatigue** — circuits that pair lifts with runs, so your body learns to produce force at high heart rates.
3. **Grip and core** — dead hangs, farmer's holds, crawls. Boring, decisive.
4. **Pacing judgment** — only earned through timed, race-format simulations. Going out 10% too fast in minute one costs you 10 minutes by the end.

## The fix is specificity, not more volume

The mistake is responding to the race by doing *more* of what you already do — more kilometres, more sets. The race does not reward volume in your strong dimension; it punishes the gaps in your weak one. Train the gaps.

That is the entire design behind the [Yoddha Race training program at Fisique](https://fisique.fitness/yoddha-race-training) — Hyderabad's official partner program: three coached classes a week split across strength, endurance, and mindset, plus weekly race simulations that chain running, carries, and strength stations against the clock. For the structure week by week, see our [8-week Yoddha training plan](https://fisique.fitness/blog/how-to-train-for-the-yoddha-race).
